First Mama Odie Test

A while back I posted a Mama Odie experimental scene, but this one was the very first animation I did with her.  When I was doing  the rough pose test I still saw the character with chubby arms and hands. Madame Mim was on my mind, so I stayed away from skinny limbs.
But I was asked to make the adjustment, as you can see in the tighter inbetweened version. And I saw right away that those proportions worked better.
For final production the scene was restaged, and I re-animated it accordingly, but the ending stayed intact. Of course eventually I added more neck mass, which was too much fun to incorporate into her dialogue with all that squash and stretch.
Jennifer Lewis gave me one of the juiciest voices I ever worked with.

  1. Wow! How long does a shot like this take to do from rough to tie down?

  2. So great! It´s always fascinating to see how masters doing planning and how scene progress. I also keen to know how long it takes to do like this scene from professional animator.

  3. People should continue to spread posts like these. They allow people to better appreciate all the hard work that goes into filmmaking.

  6. I love Jennifer's voice...it works great with the character animation and I can see how you captured the essence of her sound in the lines of a pencil. Cool stuff.

  8. That must've been a fun & rewarding production to work on. You can see it in your pencil test. It's so full of life & warmth.

Yet another gem. Thanks for sharing it, Andreas. :)

  9. Could you be bothered to go into more extensive detail on how you internalise, plan, break down and finish a scene like this? As I said before, I love seeing your pencil tests because as an artist you're available, unlike many other Disney greats who have already passed away or don't keep blogs.
Among other aspects of your animation, I especially admire your range. You animate men and women of pretty much all ages, heroes, villains, mentors, sidekicks - I'm interested in the workings of a mind so artistically flexible.

  11. LOVE YOUR PENCIL TESTS!
Mama Odie is certainly one of Disney's best characters ever.
She's just so fun, you just wanna hug her!

  12. nice to see your process. It seems like you go pretty straight ahead with your rough keys.I really like the squishy contact you get at the end. So,do you straight ahead first, and then go back and find the golden poses to work in and out of? It seems like you give a lot of stuff to your assistants to work with. Thanks fer sharing.

  13. For those who still learn or are already doing animation (especially for those who don't live in the USA), this is an excellent and unique possibility to learn from the master! These type of posts (rough animation and in-between + tie down version) are very precious and instructive.
As always, thank you for sharing and for you time.

  16. My ONLY critique is the bit with her hand on the curtain (before even a second passes by into the tie-down video), mostly because her and the curtain don't have enough... tension, I guess the word would be? But ah, what do I know... I'm only an amateur 2D animator. Other than that, I can't see any other flaws at all in this. The acting is especially marvelous, and I find myself wondering how many old people you had to observe to grasp even the concept of animating Mama Odie's face. I also adore the way her hat sways on her head. Brilliant, brilliant job!
