Wilhelm M. Busch, The Little Hero 1977

More beautiful book illustrations by Busch for Dostojewskij's novel, titled The Little Hero.
In the past I have posted samples of his work that show a linear, graphic quality. The following images are much more rendered and define a certain mood through intriguing light and shadows.
As always I love the compositions, the depth and the life in his drawings.

  1. Do you know what the media used to create these images were? Graphite, ink?

  3. Mr. Deja, I have a question I've always wanted to ask a professional animator such as yourself, whose work I admire.

When you do preliminary drawings, is it better to 'sculpt' the forms, or is it better to do very tight, deliberate shapes and give them life 'afterwards'.

Like, action line, construction, subforms, then details? or better to just let your hand flow first, and find the form in a less accurate but maybe more alive way?

Just how rough do most animators start? You never see the truly rough stuff. Do they /always/ use guide lines for the center of the figure? Or is it just for the eyes and face?

I know this sounds like a lot of questions but it's really just one. I hope you understand it it means the world to me. I've been practising drawing for 10+ years and draw at a near professional level and I've always been plagued with this dilemma.

And not only do I admire your art, but I noticed you have a lot of the same art heroes as me, particularly Marc Davis. How did HE start a drawing?

I also noticed Milt seemed to just start with details, in most of the art that's released online, with very few drawings where you see him working out the forms - was this his norm?

I'm sorry for writing such a long post and I understand if you don't have time to read it all but I'm praying you answer just about the process question at the very beginning, thank you so much for your blog and your time,

    Trevor.

    1. (By 'deliberate shapes') at the beginning I actually meant to say 'very tight, deliberate forms'

    2. Every animator has a unique way of drawing and animating. This Blog has many visual examples showcasing different approaches. Just type the name of an artist into Blog search on the upper left corner, and you will find all these different drawing styles that hopefully will inspire you.
As for myself, I always draw loose first (Feelings on paper), then refine and add details later.

    3. Thank you so much for your reply Mr. Deja, I *really* appreciate it. I'm always switching between the two and fretting over which produces the best drawing. So I'm glad to have insight into your process and I'll definitely do a search on the blog.
